De voorwaarde ‘overnachting’ geldt niet bij een definitieve overname door een andere instelling op dag van opname, of bij overlijden van de patiënt op dag van opname. Daarom is het bij overleden patiënten terecht als een verpleegdag wordt geregistreerd op de dag van de opname. Stel de patiënt is om 21u opgenomen en overlijdt dezelfde dag om 23u, dan had het ziekenhuis wel de intentie om de patiënt langer op te nemen. De benodigde zorg is dan ook aan de patiënt geleverd en dit mag dan met een verpleegdag worden vastgelegd.
